Campo Sportivo “Raffaele De Pergola”

The sports field dedicated to Raffaele De Pergola is in memory of a man whose love for sport and culture strongly influenced his community. Raffaele was born in Giovinazzo during a period of great change. After returning from the Second World War, he graduated from the University of Naples where he excelled as goalkeeper and penalty scorer in the university team. Despite his love of sport, his career took him elsewhere and he became Director of the Stock Exchange and the Foreign Office of the Fiera del Levante. However, football and his town were always very close to his heart.
Raffaele had a dream of opening a sports field in Giovinazzo for a long time, a project which would allow him to offer the community a place in which to gather and grow. Thanks to his experience and knowledge in the world of politics and finance, he was able to gather the funds necessary to create the sports field, a solid sign of his dedication and love for his town.
Ma l’impegno di Raffaele De Pergola non si limitò al mondo dello sport. La sua passione per la cultura e la storia lo spinse a fondare la Pro Loco e Il tocco del Bom Baum, il primo giornale cittadino. Il suo ruolo fu fondamentale nel Corteo Storico del 1966 e nell’organizzazione di mostre ed eventi culturali, consolidando il suo legame con la storia e le tradizioni di Giovinazzo.
Nel 2023, il Campo Sportivo “Raffaele De Pergola” è stato riaperto al pubblico, dopo una serie di interventi di riqualificazione destinati a incentivare la pratica sportiva in città. La struttura, dotata di un campo in erba sintetica, una pista di atletica leggera e un campo di calcio a 5 dedicato a Vincenzo Aniello – calciatore e allenatore giovinazzese scomparso nel 2005, che ha lasciato un’impronta indelebile nella storia sportiva locale – rappresenta oggi un importante centro per lo sport e le attività educative e formative. La storia di Raffaele continua a vivere attraverso l’impegno dei sempre più numerosi atleti che, allenandosi e gareggiando in questo spazio, sono il migliore attestato di gratitudine per l’uomo che ha onorato con lo sport e la cultura la propria terra.
